Why Toenails Become Thick
Thick toenails are not a diagnosis. Repeated pressure or trauma, fungal infection, age-related changes and other nail disorders can produce similar appearances.
Look at the whole pattern
Color, texture, crumbling, lifting, pain, surrounding skin and how many nails are involved can all provide useful context—but testing may still be needed.
Care without causing injury
Very thick nails can be difficult to trim safely, particularly for people with diabetes, circulation problems or reduced sensation. Professional foot care may be appropriate.
